Working on the Thriller - the Evaluation of the Storyboard

This week we have started working on our thrillers. Once we finalised our actual idea we moved on to the scrip, the timeline and the storyboard.

We have also created a collage with different pictures that inspired us and that was helpful for the start.

Due to the fact that our opening sequance is set in only one location we need to have other strong aspects to catch the audiences attention such as the script itself and our characters. I must say that it was quite hard to build up our script because the dialogue must be intriguing and mysterious, therefore we struggled when creating it. We had to think clearly about all the actions, gestures we want to include in every single shot so that it would make it more interesting when watching. For example the first shot when we will see have of the main protagonist's face and her hand to her lips. This close-up will create a sense of mystery and will engage the public. The timeline that we have created it's our first draft, I believe there will be more changes to it till the shoot. Probably the timing that we have chosen for every single shot will be longer or shorter keeping in mind the dialogue and the movement of the characters. Moving on to our storyboard, I think it was quite easy to present the illustrations on paper, it made our vision seem more clearer compared to before. If we would've spent a lot more time on it, it would've looked much better, but I do think that it is accurate, it is our first try, so we won't be too judgemental about this aspect. We explained every single shot in detail to make our job easier for later. We do need to work a bit more on it, but the fact that we have a wide range of different shots, such as pan shots, close-ups, long mid-shots, 360 spin shots, tilt up shots, etc. We already thought about the props needed for our opening sequence, we have a list prepared already that I'm going to post, we also have a rough idea about the costumes. As an overall I think we are on the right stage with our preparation. I am looking forward to the next step.

Creating a storyboard allowed us to see what would work and what wouldn't in our production in terms of timing and shot types.

This is the timeline that we have created before we started working on our storyboard.

We also had time to choose to of our characters which is our main character, Paulina Kaller and one of the investigators, Darina Faizova. We choose them because we think they suit the roles well in terms of physical appearance, but also drama skills. the main character has to be flirtatious and arrogant, while the investigator has to be selfish, serious and strict.

We have also managed to choose a title for our opening sequence. I came up with the idea thinking, at the Italian Mafia and at the fact that our thriller has a lot of unexpected turning points and the direction of the situation changes a lot, therefore I thought we could call it "Kaleidoscope", but we have translated it in Italian to make it more interesting, to make it sound more intriguing. So it is  Caleidoscopio.

  1. Lovely presentation as a blog entry. A clear understanding of the process of storyboarding. . I like the way in which you have introduced the importance of the storyboarding process in relation to your film opening sequence. You have identified and explained well the need to visualize the concept, the mise en scène and the characterisation, but this lack specific examples as a references point. You have also managed to fully evaluate the function of the storyboard in evaluation of the need to plan the process of shooting the MV and visualised what the final product will look like. So I would re-edit this post using a detailed reference to examples this will help with your evaluation and planning ahead.
